Rückblick auf den Kontext der Arbeit der Kunsthalle.tmp Steyr in den 90ern

Ich möchte in diesen Ausführungen ein strukturbildendes Phänomen der 90er-Jahre herausgreifen und im Kontext der Ausdifferenzierung des Kunstfeldes darstellen. Die Etablierung eines eigenen kulturellen Produktionsbereichs als komplementäre Struktur zum bis dahin dominierenden System des Kunstmarktes und der Ausstellungstätigkeit tonangebender Institutionen soll dabei im Mittelpunkt stehen. Konkrete Bezugspunkte sind dabei die Aktivitäten der Kunstinitiative in Steyr, die in vielerlei Hinsicht Teil einer generelleren Entwicklung war, deren konzeptuelle Ausrichtung jedoch eine spezifische Schwerpunktsetzung ermöglichte. So wurde das Format „Ausstellung“, die Infragestellung der Rollentrennung zwischen KünstlerInnen und KuratorInnen thematisiert, der Ausstellungsraum selbst umgedeutet und Präsentationsweisen von Gegenwartskunst erprobt. Doch nicht nur die programmatischen Inhalte, auch die geografische Lage von Steyr wird mit zum Spezifikum der generellen Entwicklungen in den europäischen Kunstwelten der 90er-Jahre.

The background to the work of the Kunsthalle.tmp Steyr in the 1990s
In what follows, I should like to single out a structure-forming phenomenon of the 1990s and describe it as part of a process of differentiation in the art business. The principal point of interest will be moves to establish local cultural production centres as a complementary structure to the hitherto dominant system of the art market and the exhibition activities of trendsetting institutions. A specific point of reference will be the activities of the art initiative in the small town of Steyr in Upper Austria. In many respects, this was part of a more general development, but conceptually the scheme had quite specific aims. A particularly interesting aspect of its work was exploring the format of exhibitions — challenging the separation of artist and curator functions, redefining exhibition spaces and trying out ways of presenting contemporary art.
But it is not only the content of the Kunsthalle’s programme that was remarkable. It was the geo-graphical position of Steyr itself in relation to the European art scene in the 1990s that became a key consideration.
